VISION HOUSE PROJECT
Vision House 2009
Mission Statement: The main mission of the Hartford Rotary Vision House Project is to emphasize vocational opportunities for Hartford Union High School students and to raise scholarship funds for technical and related educational fields by building a single family home each year in Hartford.
VISION originated in the spring of 1992 with the Hartford Rotary Club initiating a new project to raise funds to support its commitment to local scholarship programs. Upon meeting with Hartford Union High School personnel it was determined that the carpentry class could work well in a project like this. An advisory committee was formed consisting of Rotarians and Hartford High School staff and "Vocational Instruction Supporting Individual Occupational Needs" otherwise known as VISION was born. Our mission was to construct a single family home utilizing high school students within an educational program in conjunction with local businesses, then using the proceeds from the sale of that home to provide scholarships. The Hartford Rotary Club Foundation contracted with suppliers for various materials and licensed subcontractors for trades beyond the Hartford high School's capability. The Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce has been involved with the VISION project through promotion and support within the business community.
Including the Carpentry class, almost one hundred students are involved annually in VISION through Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Design, and Marketing classes. An added experience for the students is the collaboration with Habitat for Humanity of Washington County in building the 2009 and 2010 houses, our 17th and 18th consecutive successful projects.
THE ROTARIAN magazine, Rotary International's monthly publication, with a readership of over 1,100,000 featured the Hartford Rotary Vision House in its October 1996 issue. The article is on page 40. More recently, the VISION project was featured in the Rotary Video Magazine. Please also check out the HUHS VISION project pages for more information on current and past VISION homes.
